Mr. Gerald B. Hartley, Jr., retired mining engineer of Reno, founded the 'Gerald and Mabel Hartley Endowment' in honor of his wife and to benefit the Mines Library in 1980. The late Mrs. Mabel Connor Hartley, graduate of UNR, was a member of the Agriculture Extension Office from 1934 until her retirement as Emeritus Faculty in 1973.

Mr. Hartley was born in California in 1910 and moved to Searchlight, Nevada about 1914. He grew up in various mining communities of Nevada where his father was associated with the mining and milling industries around the state.

Mr. Hartley graduated from UNR in 1943 and has spent most of his life as a miner and mill operator in Nevada.

In recognition of Mr. Hartley's donations to the Mines Library and the establishment of the Endowment, the display alcove in the DeLaMare Library, formed by the merger of the Mines and Engineering libraries, was named for Gerald and Mabel Hartley.
