The conference begins on Wednesday evening, November 8, 2000, with an `early-bird supper' gathering at Linda Newman’s, host for WAML. The formal meetings and program begin on Thursday morning with a Metadata Mini-workshop simultaneously while the Executive Board meets. Great speakers are scheduled from Thursday afternoon through Friday, with a very special guest at the Banquet! Our Saturday field trip along the Truckee River to Donner Park is jointly sponsored by Geoscience Information Society of the Geological Society of America, meeting immediately following WAML.
I encourage you to make your room and air reservations early. Rooms have been blocked at the University Inn, across from UNR, but these are limited and subject to release. Details follow.
Looking forward to seeing you in Reno!

DON’T BE LEFT IN THE COLD! RESERVE YOUR PLACE NOW!
Reno by Wagon/Wheels: avoid the Donner Party disaster! Enjoy the magnificent Sierra!
Take I-5 to I-80 from CA and I-80 from Utah.
From I-80, exit to Virginia St., turning north onto Rt. 395 (business route, Exit 13). Proceed north 2 blocks to UNR and the University Inn.
Driving from southern California? Another option from southern California is Rt. 395 from the CA SE desert; rather scenic once you get out of the CA desert area and begin the drive along the east side of the Sierra Nevada.
Then there is Rt. 95 up from Las Vegas; godawful 9+ hour drive, but should be done once in your life-
Looking for a more adventurous route if coming from east of Nevada? Take the "Loneliest Road in America": Rt 50 east-west across central Nevada. No time to spare? We have a speaker scheduled to talk about his recent publication describing this route!
Road conditions: I do urge you to call; chain requirements are as frequent as snowflakes when crossing the Sierra.
530/445-7623 for CA road conditions when calling from NV
800-427-7623 calling within CA
775/793-1313 calling from NV for NV road conditions
Parking: Parking is free for those registered at the University Inn and those attending our program. Get a permit when registering for your room or, if not staying at the Inn, come into the University Inn and get a permit from the registration desk. Campus parking permits and maps are available at the Center Street entrance Information building. Take the Virginia St. exit from I-80; Center Street is parallel, one block east of Virginia St. Street parking around the University Inn is available, but limited.
Flying? If only the Donner Party had made their reservations in time! United, American, America West, Southwest, Alaska and others will be glad to press you into their seats. But, Reno is not a major city (only by reputation-) and early GSA attendees will be competing for the same seats! I urge you to book early!
Shuttle from airport: Airport Mini Bus (large van) at the north end of the terminal outside baggage claim area each half hour. $3.50 each way for a drop at the University Inn. Taxis and shuttles for the major hotels.
Train: Amtrak 800/USA-RAIL It’s a great ride from California, less exciting from Utah.
Arrive on Wed. and join the group at Linda Newman’s for supper at 6:30! Thursday night dinner at Louis’s Basque Corner; a Reno favorite where we have the `back room’ reserved. Friday is our `banquet’ at the Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery - the best new eatery in Reno with terrific beer and food and a very special guest speaker! Breakfast is available at the University Inn Cafe on the second floor as is lunch, or you may cross the street for other choices in the Student Union such as The Cellar or the usual campus quick food choices.
Reservations are needed for all evening meals; please indicate your attendance
on the
WAML registration form.
If you want to mail items for the conference such as maps for giveaway or vendor
items,
address them to:
University Inn, 1001 N. Virginia Street, Reno, NV 89503
with a bold note: Please hold for S. Smith, WAML Conference, Nov. 8, 2000.
You are most welcome to register and attend our conference. If you are a member of WAML, the fee is only an additional $25 to set up a display (tables provided) in a very spacious room immediately adjoining the meeting room. We will have numerous breaks with refreshments in the same room. Please contact me for further information.
Your guess is as good as mine! This is a high altitude, semi-arid region and officially it should average about 55 degrees high and 30 degrees low. Could be lovely, or with snow (probably not this early in the season, but likely will be cool). Always cool/cold in the evening as Reno is about 4500 ft. and Truckee is about 6500 ft. Check for the latest from the Weather Channel just before packing.
What else is happening? Check out the Reno Convention Center website for all the terrific indoor or outdoor activities in this area. The Sierra Nevada is the greatest for outdoor fun year round (This announcement courtesy of the Convention Center which is providing some registration stuff.)
